Festival Season!

Summer is fast approaching, and that means sunshine and festival season!
No one loves festival season more than the staff and volunteers at CKUA. Festival season allows CKUA to connect with the community at numerous events that embrace and appreciate different forms of art and culture.
Festivals are a great place for people to experience new things and add to their interests. They’re a great place for non-profit organizations such as CKUA to be able to gain recognition and spread awareness of a variety of cultural networks.
CKUA loves our volunteers and their continuing support! And since a big part of our mandate is connecting with the community, we encourage our volunteers to lend a helping hand to the festivals that are coming up this summer.

CKUA Spring Fundraiser Update

Happy Fundraising!

It is that time of year when all of our lovely volunteers and staff are hard at work! We are currently in the middle of CKUA's Spring  Fundraiser, which started on Thursday April 24th 2014 and will run until Sunday May 4th 2014.

Our main objective is to be able to provide our dedicated listeners with the best quality services. By celebrating music and engaging the community we strive to make life worth listening. Our target goal for the fundraiser is to reach $500,000 dollars in donations from our fantastic donors. Currently we are sitting at $248,304! (almost half way there!)

As many of you already know, the fundraiser does not limit our donors to a one time donation. We also allow them to become ongoing donors (or increase their already pre-existing monthly donations) as well as we offer a donated hour of broadcasting for the high rollers. For example a donation of $500 allows the donor to dedicate an hour of program on behalf of themselves or even on the behalf of a loved one  for a special occasion! However as many of you (our volunteers) know, the busiest time is during the double your dollar hours! This is the perfect time for a donor to donate because there donation will be doubled from a pool of donations we have gotten from other fantastic leadership donors. To see a list of those donors please visit http://www.ckua.com/common/medialib/376/731661.pdf .

Remember, it is never too  late to donate! You have till Sunday May 4th 2014 to donate to the Spring  Fundraiser please call 1-800-494-2582 or visit http://www.ckua.com/!

Need an incentive to donate? During the fundraiser we are giving away many prizes including a Grand Prize trip sponsored by AMA Travel with airfare and accommodation for four nights to Memphis, Tennessee! To read more about our fundraiser prizes please visit http://www.ckua.com/campaign_prizes .

The Spring Fundraiser would not have successfully started if it were not for both our volunteers and donors. A huge thank you goes out to all our fantastic volunteers that have been working hard in helping this  run smoothly. Another huge thank you goes to the generous donors that have contributed to the future success of CKUA. As well as a huge thank you to the food donors that have supplied us with w the essentials to keep our volunteers energized and motivated. For a list of participating food donors please visit http://www.ckua.com/common/medialib/376/731721.pdf . Without any of YOU we would be no where. THANK YOU on behalf of all of the staff at CKUA.

The CKUA volunteers are the cornerstone of our fundraisers, board members, our ambassadors at events/festivals and provide administrative support to many areas including FDO, volunteer management, Marketing etc. Without your efforts in the numerous roles you play, CKUA would not exist as it is today and for that we are forever grateful.

CKUA Venue Volunteer Opportunities!

'Tis the End of the Season.....to volunteer!

Hello CKUA Volunteers,
I hope you are staying warm as the temperature dips to a chilly and uncomfortable place this week.  Often February is the time of year that we start thinking (actually hoping) winter will end and spring will start making itself known to us soon!

William James (American philosopher and psychologist) once said "In the dim background of our mind, we know that we ought to be doing something but somehow we cannot start"

That is sort of how the end of winter feels.  You can sense the change coming, but it isn't here yet and it is very frustrating.

Here is a quote that will help you remember that spring will come and, with it, a release from the cold, windy, extra-layers of sweaters existence you've plodding through for the last couple of months!

"Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence. Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberence. Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence. Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance". -Yoko Ono

Below are 2 upcoming volunteer opportunities, sure to warm your heart and soul! Please let me know if you are able to volunteer:

Hello CKUA Volunteers!

My name is Breanne Coffill and I am the new Volunteer Program Manager here at CKUA!

I am very excited about joining the CKUA Team and also looking forward to managing a large group of such loyal and dedicated volunteers to assist at venues, during campaign season and act as CKUA Ambassadors throughout the year!

I am a born and raised Edmontonian that grew up listening to CKUA, hanging out at music festivals and spent countless hours imagining that I was "a singer in a rock n' roll band".  I started my career as a fitness professional for individuals/athletes with permanent physical disabilities and moved into providing service coordination and volunteer management in non-profit organizations for many years after that.  I am married and have two young children and enjoy spending copious amount of time with them.

As a avid volunteer myself, I think is is really important to find a cause that is close to your heart, something you are passionate about, and use that as motivation to inspire others to become involved and engaged in the "community".  Although I have not met alot of the CKUA volunteers face-to-face yet, I can already tell that your a very passionate bunch of long-time listeners, donors, and volunteers!

I want to meet every single one of the volunteers here at CKUA, so don't be shy!  give me a call, drop me an email, or if you are by the new CKUA building stop in and say hello! I promise I will greet you with a smile.

You're Invited!

Upcoming House Concert at CKUA

Benjamin and Amanda Hodgson love music and they love CKUA.  They are faithful CKUA donors and volunteers, and they have been hosting house concerts in their home in Spruce Grove for the past year and a half as BAH! Entertainment (they would have started sooner but the old house wasn't big enough!)

Tickets are usually $20, and the money goes directly to the artists.  Ben and Amanda do not make an obsolete Canadian penny from hosting these shows - in fact, there are a number of costs - but they do it for the love of music and the excitement of meeting these immensely talented artists!  It really is fun to attend such a casual, intimate concert.  Some musicians have come to the Hodgons through their participation in the Home Routes program, and some have contacted them through friends or social media.

Now, BAH! Entertainment presents the first "Home Away From Home" concert with The Bombadils at BAH!'s favourite home away from home: CKUA.  This is a ticketed event, by invitation only, and THIS is your invitation!

The Bombadils
Friday, January 24th, 2014
Doors at 7, show at 8
Tickets are $20
Contact bahconcerts@gmail.com
780.571.2286
www.bahentertainment.org

Since this is a semi-public space, you may NOT BYOB.  There will be snacks and drinks for sale: $3 beer or wine, $1 coffee, tea, muffins, chips etc, so bring your Toonies and Loonies.  All proceeds from food and beverage sales will be donated to CKUA. The Bombadils will also have merchandise for sale.

And last but not least, take a listen to the Bombadils HERE

Welcome Breanne! CKUA's new Volunteer Program Manager

Happy New Year to each and every one of you of fabulous CKUA Volunteers!

With 2014 upon us, it is with great pleasure that I announce the arrival of Breanne Coffill, your new Volunteer Program Manager.  I had the chance to meet her earlier this week and have no doubt that you're all in good hands. She is warm and friendly; smart and energetic; and most importantly, full of amazing new ideas for the Volunteer Program. Breanne comes to CKUA with a wealth of experience in the Voluntary Sector, most recently with the MS Society.  She will officially join the station this coming Monday the 6th of January, so I'm sure she'll reach out to you all with-in a couple weeks once she's settled in.

As for myself, next week will be my last with CKUA, as the pilot program for Event Space Rentals was not renewed. I'd like to thank you all for your help and patience as I filled in for Susan over the past couple of months. It has been a pleasure to get to know many of you better and I look forward to seeing your smiling faces when I return as a volunteer for the Spring Fundrasier.

Until then, stay warm and tune in!

-Ericka Bold

One Year Later...

It's been one whole year since the Library has 'officially' moved into the new building! And while this is the time everyone is getting ready for the holiday season I'd like to take a moment and thank everyone that helped out with the complete insanity that was the Library move. (Insanity as in, I'm still not sure how we pulled it off, but I don't think it could have gone smoother!)
Even though the majority of the packing and moving was done last year there were exceptions, like those pesky 741 boxes of assorted former-basement materials that made it over August 2013. Again the amount of work that went into getting them sorted, unpacked and put away was extensive and yet done SO QUICKLY with a positivity that I can only call cheer - you guys are honestly amazing.  And I couldn't be happier to have the opportunity to meet and work with you guys, whether it's been stictly in that six months or campaign time or weekly.
Enough with the talking! Let's take a look back at the move...

I hope everyone has a great holiday season/break and I'll see you all in the New Year!
